In addition to tax returns and detailed income statements, lenders often ask for a profit and loss statement. This may throw you for a loop considering it’s something normally asked of a business not an individual, but in the bank’s eyes you are a business since you are a 1099 contractor!

“We’re gonna need more crayons. There is not necessarily a lot of competition for the title of ‘Greatest unauthorized Kanye West coloring book of all time,’ but newly announced Color Me Kanye would earn it even if there was.”

“I worked with Jeff in earlier sessions of Introduction to the Composer’s Craft and the Headliners Club. He has a beautiful perspective and really seems to look at his music from multiple angles. In addition to writing music, Jeff is a gifted photographer, and that comes through when you listen to his work. In the composition course, we discussed the foundations of writing music — things like form, tonality, etc., and then went on to develop his artistic voice during a follow-up session of the Headliners Club.

Think of a narrative like a story you might read in a book. It should let people into your world and show your vulnerable and emotional side. People have been telling stories since the beginning of civilization. It’s how we learned to communicate and create culture, and being able to describe your story in a relatable way that fans can really latch onto is almost as important as being able to describe your music.

The previous section dealt with music that we, as youngsters, opted to listen to. But you can achieve similar results with melodic and intervalic relationships culled from children’s music. Children’s music is often written so simplistically as to be memorable for life, so referencing those simple melodies is sure to bring an audience back to those early formative moments.

I probably cheated by throwing a festival in the mix, but there are a lot of great songwriters playing Gigawatts Festival, a 3-day romp in East Williamsburg featuring 80+ bands spread out at The Wick, The Well, and Our Wicked Lady. My favorites are tight dream-pop weavers Celestial Shore and art-soul-freaks Ava Luna. These guys exemplify songwriting as a true team effort, allowing for lots of colors and variations from each player. My band is playing as well (Saturday at 2:30pm); but it’s hardly worth mentioning, as I assume you’ll all still be in bed recovering after a week of taking in all of the excellent music this town has to offer!

Why do some songs tug on our heartstrings while others fall flat? It’s what allows modern music producers and songwriters to convey a sense of danger, triumph, or melancholy.
