Always make a poster or flyer to have a visual for the event. It can, but doesn’t always have to be professional. Images give people something associated with your event that they can stare at or share. Ideally you want all the details about the show on the poster itself (ticket price, doors, bands, venue, address, age restriction, etc.). But if you can find other areas to post that information in favor of clean design, that’s up to you. A simple poster is a good poster.
Knowing your audience is a crucial aspect of marketing your music, but it is also important to consider your audience when writing your music. What kind of people (outside of your friends and family) do you want your music to appeal to? What artists do people in your target audience listen to? Which moods and lyrics does your audience relate to?
Unsuk Chin is a South Korean composer now living and working in Berlin. Like her mentor Gyorgy Ligeti, Chin’s incredible technical prowess gives her unique control and precision over her craft. Known for pushing boundaries in October 2017, Chin won the illustrious Wihuri Sibelius Prize, which includes a grant of €150,000, adding her name to a list of composers and former winners that includes Ligeti himself, Stravinsky, Britten, Messiaen, and of course Jean Sibelius. With a seriously impressive portfolio of opera, orchestral, chamber, vocal, solo, and even electronic/electroacoustic work, Chin’s sound world is increasingly broad, challenging, and beautiful.

This was the first single off of Dookie, which has sold 20 million copies to date. In 2004, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the album, artists such as Good Charlotte and Sum 41 recalled the impact Dookie had on their lives for an article on MTV.com. My favorite quote, which kind of encapsulates what Green Day first contributed to music, comes from Billy Martin from Good Charlotte. “I remember he said ‘masturbation’ in [‘Longview’], and I was like, ‘No way!’ Green Day didn’t care. They were just doing their thing and there was nothing like them on TV.”
Got 10 minutes to learn about the history of the drum kit as we know it today? We talk about how individual drums, players, and genres helped the kit evolve.
Plus, holy crap, they gave Bieber his own entire verse this time! He grew up so fast. Seriously, though, it’s really cool how all of the verses in this song are completely distinct from one another, yet still follow an 8+4 construction.
The combination of footage and rain special effects means it’s not one of the cheaper video productions on this list, but it is an excellent example of a music video that ticks all the boxes. It has stunning visuals that adhere to the song’s meaning and a gripping, unique storyline.

When the studio asked for a song that sounds like The Beatles, Schlesinger decided to use similar instruments, style, and production techniques from the time period. If anyone in their 40s or 50s walked into the theater to watch the film, they were immediately transported back to their youth. For those of us too young to have lived through the early 1960s, it’s likely that our parents introduced us to the music of The Beatles at some point so that we’d have our own developmental reference point as well.
I’m not surprised that creative feedback makes a difference; it’s the kind of feedback I wished I got from my own music teachers, not to mention my peers.
So, as you can see from these experiments of mine, I believe that this line of inquiry can help retrieve powerful and beautiful ideas from a venerable worldview that is strange to us, having gotten the short end of Enlightenment thinking. I think this perspective can ground us in deep cultural roots, offering us immense creative potential for our current moment, and I’m curious to see what others working in this capacity will bring to the table in the future! Perhaps it’ll be you.
I’ve always been a vinyl lover. The entire time I spent digging through crates or discovering new music through online channels, I kept thinking the same things:
When we apply the Dorian mode to blues music (and by extension, rock ‘n’ roll), we begin to explore some really exciting implications. The Dorian mode and minor pentatonic scales share these common scale degrees: 1 ♭3 4 5 ♭7.
